As part of the « Sous les pixels, la matière » exhibition taking place at the Pont du Gard from September 13, 2024 to January 5, 2025, artist Nicolas Tourte is exhibiting Fondation, co-produced by VIDEOFORMES.
The “Sous les pixels, la matière” exhibition, organized by the Pont du Gard in partnership with Echangeur 22 and Labirinto, invites Regina Silveira, Ana Maria Tavares, Mona Young-Eun Kim and Nicolas Tourte to question the relationship between the real and the virtual, through works that blend nature and artifice. The artists then propose works, including a series of in-situ productions, that stimulate new ways of seeing and conceiving the digital as an instrument of plastic creation: from video mapping to augmented reality, photography, sculpture, video and multi-media installation.
Fondation by Nicolas Tourte
Nicolas Tourte’s Fondation video installation echoes a sad fact that scientists are warning us about: ice is no longer eternal. While we see a world disappearing, melting ice is not without effect on ecosystems… It’s as if our societies, launched in a frantic race for profits and abundance, exploitation and servitude, had decided on their ends, their erasure, their disappearance.
Through the aesthetics of his work, the artist literally translates that the “foundations” on which it rests seem to disintegrate to the rhythm of the melting ice. In creating this piece, Nicolas Tourte drew inspiration from the techniques used to produce advertising signs. The word Fondation is tilted lengthwise, as if the sign had fallen into a puddle of water. A video projection creates a textural mapping of the sign’s surface, in shades of blue, grey and white, playing with the light reflections inherent in ice.
